Good vision in seeing the face! You got great even lighting and avoided any harsh shadows showing great technique though it is lacking in depth. I think it lacks a little of what flickr calls interestingness due to the whole shot consisting mostly of wood...

Bold, beautiful color in this and very striking against the dark background. A touch more crispness/focus would really make this pop. I see some don't like the centered comp - I think it can work, especially with flowers. Maybe more of a square crop to emphasize the centeredness, too.

Great colour and clarity in this image... and DOF is brilliant. Where the shot suffers is in the composition and crop. That blade of grass that goes from the bottom right to right in front of the birds head... a killer. Also, cropping the birds tail... ouch! Final negative is the blurry colourful thing in the background... lose these three things, and you would have been laughing. Though... still think you may have had a lot of pedants making you down for not being above the subject enough... perhaps.
