Speed wheelsby Adrian TungComment by orussell: When I saw this I thought this is going to get a ribbon. I gave it an 8, the highest vote I cast in the challenge. I certainly didn't think mine could possibly beat this great entry. There's surely no accounting for taste. Cheers.

Speed wheelsby Adrian TungComment by Adrian Tung: Thanks for all the comments. This is my first submission and am very happy about my results, although I will strive to do better in future challenges.
For those who asked how I did it, it was just a matter of using long exposure (4 seconds) and pushing the model car forward with my hand. I stopped the car for the last 1 second or so to obtain the final sharp image.
Lighting was a problem because I didn't have any proper studio setup for this shot. This was done entirely on a table lined with heavy black cardboard for the background. There was one fluorescent tube light directly overhead, one on the wall to the left and one more at a staircase behind. Also the afternoon sun was shining through a glass window directly above the table (about maybe 16-18 feet high?). After experimenting with some settings, I just ended up turning off all the lights except the staircase one which got reflected nicely on the rear view mirror.
I actually experimented with a few other settings including a "double vision" version where there are two in-focus images and a blur in between, and one where the car sped from left to right but thought it was too cliched. In the end I decided on this one. Message edited by author 2003-07-09 02:40:53. |

Speed wheelsby Adrian TungComment by nborton: nice combination of blur and focus overlapping. i also like the use of a solid background to take away some distractions. however, by making the background totally black it makes the car seem as though it's floating which makes the photo seem unstable. |

Speed wheelsby Adrian TungComment by dsidwell: Amazing! I hope you'll give us the beef on how you did this! Super composition, and I love how the car seems be gong faster than the speed of light! 10 |
