This idea would work good with an open blue sky background to bring out the leaves. It's interesting in this shot how it looks like the leaves are moving from the ground going upward to me. If your speedlight has the strobe (multiple flash) feature, you may get some unusual looking shots of leaves falling with several flashes.

Looks like fun! Don't worry about someone else taking your photo. I'm pretty much convinced that some of the self-portraits that I see are taking by someone other than the person in the photo.

Yes, a good angle indeed - again losing the outline of the bottle to all that black is a good choice - I'm not so sure I would be as struck by the image if I could make out the entire bottle.
