Actually, they had landed after a performance and he spun out on the taxiway and kicked in the smoke machine when he did so. These have smoke devices on them specifically for use in airshows. Here's some shots of them performing that I considered for the "best of" challenge but didn't use:

I like retro borders and in a side challenge nobody can low vote me for it. I do appreciate the feedback on that, however. It reminds me to be sparing when using borders in a voted challenge. I should give serious consideration to whether it truly enhances the image, because it's impossible to use a border without someone objecting to the use.

The processing works well to add a vintage look to this, but I'm not a fan of the bordering. I can see it working well when presented in another medium, but the rabbeting on the edges and the white just looks silly in this context. If that white were transparent... it would work well.
The cigar is great, and I also like that you've captured him in front of a building which does not indicate the modernity of the shot, it is not an anachronism.
