Men are from Mars, Women are from...by Yo_SpiffComment by Yo_Spiff: Originally posted by colorcarnival: Texas? What's on the sides of her head? Looks like Princess Leia muffs. This is crazy fun :) |
It's just a thing on her head. You can see a better view in FtWorthphotog's street photography entry, showing her buying the balloon hat a little earlier:

Bryanby Yo_SpiffComment by EL-ROI: Great light and shadows in this natural light setting. The brick wall is a great backdrop. But I agree with others about the sharpness. Pulling the subject off the wall would have helped. Your exif info shows you at f6.3. So the field of focus extended further behind the subject than in front of him (distance depending on you focal length any where from infinite to 1 1/2 ft.) creating the sharper wall.
I think you did well with the full length portrait, however I am torn between whether it should be oriented portrait or landscape. This is through no fault of your own. There is a conflict to me with the horizontal width of the bike and the vertical height of the person. It seems to be somewhat out of balance and weighted heavily at the bottom. The only way to change that is to reorient the bike so that he and the bike are both facing you to get only the front plane of the bike, or changing your position by shooting at him down the length of the wall. |

Bryanby Yo_SpiffComment by MinsoPhoto: Not sure what I would have given this in voting but I would like to say a 7. I love the lighting and am a fan of black and white. I think the centered comp works well for this shot. Not a WOW shot but still a very well done image. |

Bryanby Yo_SpiffComment by colorcarnival: If you are gonna go with soft focus then I feel everything should be in soft focus. The sharpness of the wall pulls my eye to the right. He's a pleasant looking fellow and this is a nice candid, but for a FS, this would not engage me much. I'd give it a 5 or a 6. |

Bryanby Yo_SpiffComment by lawrysimm: Commenting for the critique thread - I don't actually see a whole lot wrong with this image. For a free study my starting vote would probably be a 7 then adjusted based on the strength of the competiton.
The deep shadow in the alcove draws my gaze a little, like I'm trying to find what is lurking in the dark, but it's not a real big issue. The setting is fine, and suits the shot, though I agree the centre composition detracts a little too. Finally, the it white saddle bag also draws the eye, maybe a bit of darkening on that to make it less impactive on the image as a whole would help?
But that's just being picky I guess, as on the whole I like it.
As an aside, is Bryan blind? He has a kind of distant gaze that is reminiscent of a friend that is blind. Message edited by author 2012-09-06 15:21:35. |

Bryanby Yo_SpiffComment by littlemav: Love the light, but to me the shot needs some more contrast and not a center crop |
