This is a solid image with a lot of potential, and a good subject choice for the challenge. But it is representational, and not interpretational. Here is a fence.
This could easily have scored much higher with some different choices, principally lighting. Here it is flat, with everything having the value. In fact, the eye is drawn more to the bright areas of the background, between the slats. In short, it's a very generalized image without an indication of where you want us to focus our attention. |

In general, I feel that your images suffer from I call "context" - it exists only for the person who takes the photo, and thus is more meaningful and interesting to them because they know the story behind it, or when/where/what was happening when it was taken. The view does not have access to any of that, and thus the image alone is not interesting.
Image choice: Extended FS are where people bring their A+++++ game. I'm more interested in knowing why you felt this image fit into that category. It would certainly be appropriate for challenges such as vintage, or music.
Technicals: the lighting is flat and dull, the focus is neither sharp, nor blurry enough to be an artistic choice, and it's quite noisy. The tilt does add a sense of movement, and the color certainly is eye-catching. |
| 03/17/2023 12:48:19 AM | Back and Frontby WildpurpleComment by Yo_Spiff: Critique per your request: I can tell you were trying to use some nice soft evening light coming in the window, and you used the better camera (I also have an EM10 Mk2, though it is now my backup body after buying an EM5 mk3.) The lighting looks a bit weird here and I think that is what hurt it. Strong shadows that put an edge on your subject instead of it being soft and pleasing. Perhaps this was actually shot at night, so the light coming in is harsh lights from outside instead of soft and pleasing sun. Also shot at ISO 1600, though the EM10 should be able to handle that without any visible noise at this viewing size.
I see I gave it a 5 in the challenge. Message edited by author 2023-03-17 00:48:42. |

For me that means I liked it but it didn't blow me away or have strong personal appeal. Nice colors.Perhaps what kept it in the mid 5's is that it wasn't abstract enough. I see my own entry in this challenge, which I really like, didn't quite hit that magic 6 either.
I like to do abstracts, but they don't tend to have mass appeal. They do better when it is an abstract themed challenge topic. When I enter an abstract in a non-abstract challenge, I don't expect it to do anywhere near the top. |

Selective color is tricky and I don't do it often. I think I have just one photo of mine in my personal faves that I did selective color on. |

I see you shot this with your Coolpix L30, not the EM10. Aperture is wide open and the ISO is raised to 400 because you were shooting in low indoor light. For a camera like that, those settings account for the softness. I'd bet if you shot this with your EM10, it would have performed well enough with the lens wide open that you could have gotten some of the finer details of the record grooves to show. Playing with the angle of the light could also do some interesting things reflecting on the record. |
