Jason's advice is sound. Use higher shutter speed, both to avoid the motion of the moon itself moving and to avoid camera shake (especially with such a big telephoto)

Nice to read your tale. The image itself resonates with you because of the backstory, I'm not sure how well it comes across to me the viewer as presented though.

For the challenge it would need to be sharply focused. Also statues don't fare very well in challenges.

Again, an interesting study. I think the shallow dof is ok here - just ok - butI find it to be so mindlessly used (abused), at least on DPC, that I've grown jaded and very tiredof the effect to be honest.

Man, I am damn glad to see you have put away the sewing machine because this is a really good study. Good eye for the shapes and textures, and the way you lined up that veritcal line was a good choice. Some might say 'where's the white point', but I think the range of tones is very nice here.

I think you've got an interesting subject here. It's old, it's unusual, it's full of interesting shapes and details.

Really the challenge here is how to present it. Some thoughts on this particular approach would be to come out wide a bit so the object doesn't feel cramped in the frame. I'd also rotate the shot a bit to the right to level out some of the main horizontal lines.

I'm way behind on comments so you may have already moved on, but it might be worth shooting this thing from different angles as well as isolating 'pieces' of it. The back wheel with that handle looks like it could make for an interesting head-on shot in a square crop for instance.

I remember you were playing with some lighting - the way you spilled some light on the background is great and pops this thing out a bit.

Nice moon, especially for your first try! A couple of things I have learned about taking moon shots is that 1 the moon is very bright and 2 it is moving really fast! I think you will be amazed if you bump up your ISO and shoot with a faster shutter speed. Here is a quote from the Internet which I have found to be true:

With exposures longer than 1/15 sec on a stationary camera, the moon's stately glide across the sky (at ~15 arc seconds per second) will be plenty fast enough to smear its shape and blur its features. An arc second here on Earth is a mile on the moon.

There isn't enough contrast to distinguish the silhouetted figure from the dark background.

This is great for your first try. I can see the detail on the moon.
