I know how you feel about the amount of light getting in. I did a similar shot! (linkz)

I controlled mine by leaving the shutter open, keeping the room dark and using a burst of flash, then moving the lights into frame and turning them on for just moment.

I kept my aperture wide open despite the light to keep the bokehz as round as possible.

Took a few goes to get something that kinda worked, I settled with what I got.

I like the portait very much as it has very nice lighting. Not sure the lights add much. Also nothing denotes the llghts are in the foreground -- it could be just as easily background.
