Thanks for all your great comments. Originally not a great photo - plastic on the windows, ugly window division, ill-defined dried flowers; converting to BW minimized some of this, and cropping brought out what I felt the dog felt, which is also what I used to feel about Sunday afternoon as a child. (Of my work on DPC, this and 'Lady' are the two I feel best about).

Yaa that could be my monitor too.
I just bumped up everything to see how it would look.

High contrast are difficult sell.
Look at this:

First thanks for your comments I value them a lot.
Second pet pictures are not my cup of tea so for me its difficult to make any comments on it.
The only reason that I could think why it did bad is that it was in free study and against lots of very good work. Here someone has to come to bottom.

What's he looking at? Why's his tail wagging (love the hint of motion BTW)? There's a story here. That's the first thing I think of. Then I want to know what he looks like but I'm bummed because as the viewer I'll never know.

I do like how the lines in the pavement/sidewalk radiate out like they are pointing to the main subject. The diagonal that the dog is on adds tension (in a good way) to those.

Could be a tad underexposed? Overall, it's "ok", but one that probably was moved along fairly quickly during voting.

All JMO of course. :-)

I think the overall composition is done very well -- like figaro said, we automatically look up and out to see what the dog is looking at, and find ourselves pulling to get loose to go. If possible, I think more space up and to the left, creating more negative space would have made it stronger. Maybe also a slightly lower perspective, so I don't feel like I am just standing there looking down on a dog. And last but not least, the dog's whites look almost pinkish on my screen, especially up near the head. This gives at least the illusion of being slightly off in exposure and lacking brightness

more evidence of the amazing inability of DPC voters to see a good photo.

I like this. Our eyes are immediately drawn outside the frame as we share the dog's obvious curiosity. I would have liked to see this in B&W I must admit. This is never a shot that's going to do well on DPC, which I guess you knew already, but kudos for submitting it!

You know this caught my eye of course, because of the strong contrasts! I love how it looks like her ear is perked up. And the open chair behind her leads one to wonder what else is missing. Also cool is how the window seen kind of evolves from total blankness to a growing nature scene. Pretty cool!
