This shot is a stark reminder that yes, things do change, when we get older.

A battle-scarred warrior. Not sure what I think about the texture overlay on the background.

And just look at the scars on his face. Old warrior.

Great shot, but it says 'magnificent' to me, rather than 'desolate'.

This is kind of all over the place. Yet it's one of a few photos in this challenge that genuinely answer the brief (certainly does it better than my entry!). So for that I'm giving this a decent score :) Also there's something quite nice about the chaos and jumble here. Unconventional and confusing, in a rather interesting way.

I would have scored this higher except that the focus seems a tad soft and the animal doesn't pop off the background.

Comment by Beetle:
Sorry, but I can NOT see desolation here.

The meaning of desolation is very negative.

des·o·la·tion
/ˌdesəˈlāSHən/
Noun
A state of complete emptiness or destruction.
Anguished misery or loneliness.
Synonyms
devastation - havoc - ravage - destruction - solitude

What you are showing here (although in a static, centered way) is peace, tranquillity and beauty.

I guess it is all in the interpretation and I think I better just NOT vote.
