I believe the intention of the challenge was to take a b&w photo in color mode. This is why desaturation was discouraged. To make it more challenging. I don't think the challenge was to shoot a color photo with b&W in it. It may be a suttle difference in interpretation.

Great capture but focus is soft. And really when I think of Black and White in color, I think Black and White in color, not black and white with a touch of red lol.

Great job! A nice photo, but lacks any real interest of subject. In addition, a water shot, or even a shoreline shot, does not always mean 'beach' in my opinion. And meeting the challenge, to me, is the first and most important thing, if that isn't done, then anything else is unimportant. Doesn't mean it's not a beautiful and creative shot, because in this case, it absolutely is! I do love it! I went back and forth on how to score your pic, but I do vote low for those that I don't think meet the challenge, so to be consistant, I am voting this lower than I want for the reasons stated above.

I've up'd my vote a little bit but the image overall is blurry on both monitors. I also would have seen more coin the subject then the cat. I'd also recommend burning the background a little to darken it up or just decrease the brightness by -10 first to see if that helps.
