Summer's endby snafflesComment by vlado: Commenting as part of my Team Suck duties...
This is a wonderful photo... and reading the comment paulbtlw left you, there's not a single thing I disagree with there... but given this is my 500th comment on DPC, and I'm commenting on behald of Team Suck, I think I have to do a little more than just say "Ditto" or "What paulbtlw said"... so... in addition to your earlier comment, I'd like to add.
As I sit here, looking for more to say that hasn't been said, there's an almost 3-D quality to this image that makes these boys POP out of the screen. I'm almost expecting the image to start to pan around them Matrix style
As I've mentioned in one or more of the other Team Suck comments I've left for this Free Study, I've come to have a greater appreciation for the image during my time looking at it as I look for words for my comment. I suspect this experience may alter my voting habits, and I may be more generous with my time when voting. I often reassess my votes when I revisit photos on my commenting phase, but many images that I don't get to with comments don't get the benefit of the bump, merely because it takes so long for me to comment... perhaps because I'm a bit partial to these rambling type comments... which begin to talk about itself, i.e. the comment, instead of the image which is supposed to be the subject of the comment... concentration issues? Me? Never... what was I saying?.... oh yes... had I had the opportunity to get back to this image to comment while voting was still possible, I guarantee that this would have received a decent bump from me... probably of a proportion that would have got it up to "most under appreciated" consideration.
I'll end my ramble here... but before I move on to comment 501, I'll say... beautiful, fun photo. Well done. |

Alone at lastby snafflesComment by ericwoo: Hey there from the Critique Club
My thoughts on the image: I do indeed like the ass. That's my first thought. I do also like the mono-toning that you created with your post-processing. The tones are nice, but a little flat to my eye. The pose is classic, and I like the flow that you created with your positioning.
My ideas for improvement: I don't care for the crop that you chose for the image. The narrow frame makes my eye feel trapped and unable to explore. The focus also seems soft to me. I am guessing that this was a self-portrait which would perhaps explain the softness.
Where I would have/did score this entry: I didn't vote on any entries from the nude challenge this time around as I have spent far too much time at work lately. Had I cast a vote in this entry, it would have probably fallen into the 4-5 range. I do love the idea of your image here, and I think you have a really, really strong start. I jut think that the execution and main focal area should have been in a different area. Nice work, and again, I do like the butt you presented here.
Thank you for the opportunity to provide a critique on your entry,
Eric

Roadside memorialby snafflesComment by colorcarnival: I thought this was an interesting capture and also thought it was quite clever, because I would not have thought to use something like this for the challenge. I like the muted gray tones but I too, would like to have seen some more color pop on the flowers. This is purely based on my own expectation and belief that colors represent life (and happy memories), especially in the type of situation you found here. |

Got a light?by snafflesComment by andrewt: A fire juggling act ? A little overexposed IMO, try to tone down the exposure to get more details in the flame, 6 |

Summer's endby snafflesComment by Paul: OK, I'm going through the Free Study submissions, purposefully finding those images I think are shot with a less conventional eye - this is one of those images! Thanks for offering something that isn't just DPC friendly eye-candy (though of course there's nothing wrong with eye-candy). I'll be picking one of these images for my Mu (most underrated) award:
Positives: Picked this up on my second pass through for long comments - I think it is suitably unconventional to be included in this comment series. First - perfect technicals - great stuff. Subject-wise, this just gets better the more you look at it; the in-step position of the boys is fantastic. I do fear for them a little though - the under-surface rocks look treacherous. I really enjoy the red bridge and how your DOF effortlessly includes it. That makes me think. Very high DOF, small aperture but a shutter quick enough to really freeze the movement, no high ISO betraying noise either. You must have had bags of light on that day.
Critical stuff: Nothing at all.
Overall: A very good image that gets better and better the more you look at it. |

Roadside memorialby snafflesComment by Dave Gordon: The overall gray is perhaps fitting for the mood, but the colors of the flowers should really pop to make this an outstanding photo. It's a delicate balance, and it may not be possible, but I'd rate this as a great idea that didn't quite make it. |
