In this case the negative is pronounced. It is a rather dark and sad conclusion, but certainly one can not argue that this vessel is no longer responding to whatever the torment was. A thoughtful image. Bump.

It robs this image of any sense of realism, for which it would seem to depend for its impact; so it becomes just a cod pose, and possibly slightly dismissive of the idea of despair, by implication.
