The Ides of March 7:14 AM by hahn23Comment by nam: Just beautiful, Richard. Looking at the color version I can see why you chose to include so much of the scene to the left, but for the black and white, I think I agree with those who want more of the right. My heart aches for this place at this moment in time. |

Actually, I had thought the side challenge wasn't about posting challenge entries, but I looked back at the original post and saw that I was wrong.
This is certainly deserving of a ribbon, and one of the great landscape photos on this site, probably. It would look even more fantastic in a larger size. |

Lenticular Clouds Overhang Boulderby hahn23Comment by MacDonald: I was so surprised this scored below a 5 - I gave it a 7 and was going to go back and up my votes on a few shots, this one included, after I finished voting. I got distracted and didn't follow through. These clouds are not common - they look as if they are protecting the trees from the coming storm. This shot is perfectly photographed, processed just right and is a creative and interesting take on the challenge.
I did a set up shot and it was boring. The model was too close to the b/g to give it the oof look it needed and it scored higher than yours - ridiculous.
I have been away for quite some time and only enter sporadically and I am amazed at how photos are now being judged on DP - people used to maybe take off one point if they didn't think it fit the challenge but now - 1, 2 and 3 votes are the norm. I long for the old days and have gone back to voting as my way of protesting and your entry is another incentive for me to continue. Thank you . |

Lenticular Clouds Overhang Boulderby hahn23Comment by HarveyG: I was a 7. Clouds could also be used as a diffuser/filter, much as a shoot through umbrella or light tent. Literal understandings are 90+ % of DPC challenges and you should know by now you are going to get hammered Richard. |

:)
I think there's a big difference between throwing a pair of scissors on the table vs working with lighting, composition, and maybe adding a few more elements into the scene. I don't follow you enough to know whether or not you like the studio shots, but IreneM's shot in this challenge is actually pretty good. To me she put some thought into her photograph.
Not trying to discount your entry, but I was hoping to give you a perspective on why you would have received a 5 or 6 for this shot. Of course, that kind of explanation was not asked for, so my apologies for doing so. |

To me the subjects of the photo are all the beautiful snow-covered trees. After reading your comments, I am searching for the rocks and see what I believe are the items, scattered throughout the scene. The challenge here becomes this: how do you convey familiarity to those not native to the area? It's a beautiful shot, certainly not deserving the low scores, but I think what hurts it in a voting challenge is the lack of a quick link to the theme. |
