Surf Photogby gliphixComment by DelRioPhoto: Wow, what a gutsy move. You must have one of the water proof cases or maybe it's a ziplock. Either way, you scored points for a difficult shot to obtain. Surfs up. |

Surf Photogby gliphixComment by RolandB: Can only imagine how difficult this shot was to get, but it needs to be sharper for my tastes. |

Surf Photogby gliphixComment by HBunch: I realize under the circumstances, that this might have been a difficult shot to get as is, but The focus is very soft throughout the entire photo. There are some harsh highlights on the face, and the horizon line isn't horizontal.
I do like the composition though, with the person off to the left of the photo and not in the center. That works well here. Not sure if I like the 'I held the cam in front of my face and snap' look though. Nice to meet you non the less!

Stuck On Youby gliphixComment by Elaine: To me, portrait photography controls the setting. This seems to be a nature shot more than a portrait. I would like it better with sharper focus. |

Ok, you've taken the photo well and you clearly know how to use your camera to the get the best results, your other competition entries back this up. However, I think that despite being technically sound, this image doesn't best link itself to the competition itself. There isn't much in your image that really distinguishes itself as something to do with 'cinema' instead of just another happy holiday shot.
Your DOF is perfect, keeping just the interesting subject(s) in focus and allowing the fairly uneventful yet setting background to remain slightly blurred. It works well with the small details on the two boys such as the reflections on the right and shadows on the left with the small sky-reflecting pools of water at their feet.
For me, this image shows something that is about to have a piece of action in it, but doesn't stir up a need to keep observing the scene. I think that one of your still motion shots of the surfers doing what they do best might have gone a little further.
Good Luck with all Future Competitions!

Stuck On Youby gliphixComment by ShutterPug: I realize this type shot isn't easy, but it still needs to be in better focus to score well. As for the composition, I think I would prefer to see a tighter crop on the one side - and only have negative space showing where they are headed. |
