The Millby gullComment by Brad: Congrats Paul on your first and Blue Ribbon to boot!
You have found the recipe to wowing the voters here and presented us with a fine photograph. Don't let negative comments get you down. It happens once in a while after the fact. You passed the voters approval, ended up with a Blue ribbon - just be proud of it.
What if you did this in black & white? Would you be guilty of emulating Ansel Adams? So what if you did? Many of us will die trying to learn a successful way of presenting a fine image. |

The Millby gullComment by SandyP: Well.. .I have to chime in and say that I totally disagree with Imagineeer and Kemptonreporter. I think this photo is exactly why good photographers need to not be so anal and rigid about any "rule" (and the rule of thirds one is so incredibly over-emphasized here). . .and realize that a great photo can take all sorts of compositions. It's the eye of the great ones that "sees it" and throws the "rules" out the window. This photo is incredible, and the perspective of that upward winding cobblestone road against that dramatic sky with these beautiful blue tones. I think if ever there was a deserving blue ribbon this is it! And way to go, waiting till you got "the one", entering it and winning blue on your first call! You rock, and this is totally awesome! The Millby gullComment by Imagineer: I think you're actually very lucky to be blue, as I'm sure you realise too. This is a relatively average, over exposed shot made 'better' by some fairly clumsy processing. Sorry, but this is the kind of editing becoming prevalent here at DPC and it's not a good thing.
The centred composition doesn't do it for me, although the foreground has interest and you have a strong viewpoint too. The subject is OK, but your horizon line slices dead centre too which kills much of what drama may have been available. I would have included much more cobblestones and less of that undramatic, overcast sky, creating some stronger leading lines. |
