day 10 - look, mom! no hands!by rachelellenComment by kellyrc01: Bittersweet story, I keep telling myself to remember these words when I have kids one day, I can't believe how fast even kids who are friends of the family grow...it is too fast. This is a great shot, I haven't been able to master the art of making the background blurry like that when someone is in motion, this really gives you the speed feeling, great shot!! |

day 10 - look, mom! no hands!by rachelellenComment by jonfrommk: What a wonderful story and I would endorse the massage fully
More than that this is a lovely photograph, superb motion blur, great colours and just the sheer fun of being a boy. This is definitely a keeper and I would say probably a framer as well
Tell your son that its cool to ride without using your hands (and the fact that you are probably giving your mum conniptions by doing it is just an added bonus)
After saying that your ball of wool was my favourite shot of yours in the challenge so far yesterday I have to say this tops that by a country mile
Fantastic |

day 10 - look, mom! no hands!by rachelellenComment by rachelellen: Originally posted by citymars: Shutter: 1/50sec -- I usually use 1/60, but then I haven't done many of these. I'll have to try it your way, as mine don't turn out so well!
Thanks for the story. I'll bet you have nice kids. The trouble with telling kids not to grow up too fast is that it never makes sense until you are over the hump and trying to slow down. Same as it ever was, I guess. |
I do have nice kids, thank you. :)
re: shutter speed: assuming, as was the case here, that I'll have plenty of chances to get the shot (he was riding his bike back and forth on the street in front of our house), I usually start out with the shutter as slow as the light will allow, and do a lot of bracketing, getting the shutter gradually faster. I prefer a really blurry blur, like say 1/20th, but getting a good sharp shot at that speed is pretty much pure luck, especially without a tripod. Usually I get lucky around 1/40th.
Motion panning was one of the first photography "tricks" I learned about, and it's still one of my favorites. Message edited by author 2007-07-11 15:36:10. |

day 9 - unraveling.jpgby rachelellenComment by citymars: That's a really nice story, and one of my favorite photos in your 50-day portfolio so far. Excellent "red on red" (or maroon-on-maroon) shot. Very sharp at the focal point and good use of DOF.
I'm definitely a pack-rat, so I can identify with keeping things long beyond their usefulness.

day 10 - look, mom! no hands!by rachelellenComment by Ken: You are so right - sometimes I wish there was a pause button for the kids. We are lucky that we have cameras and know how to use them. I shoot, shoot, and then shoot some more. If we preserve our images, the memories will never fade. Great capture. |

day 9 - unraveling.jpgby rachelellenComment by Charlene: My mother is very creative in the sewing arts as well. And I'm very very sentimental. Very sweet and sad image. But I'm glad that you're improvising and doing something better with it than just tossing it. It does deserve so much more. Very nice image and story. |
