Rainbow Refractionsby gerardComment by jmsetzler: Greetings from the Critique Club :)
Hi Gerard...
Your color in this shot is phenomenal and the color against the white has great effect also. That creates some stark contrast that enhances your color very well. The image also has an excellent abstract quailty to it while not totally alienating the viewer with some object that is unidentifiable.
The diagonal composition also works very well.. I'm glad you did not decide to compose it in such a way that the thermomenter exited the frame in both corners...
I have no suggestions for improvement on this photo... I like it just the way it is... excellent work :)
Keep it up :)
John Setzler

Rainbow Refractionsby gerardComment by gerard: Thanks for all the comments! I thought of using the Galileo themometer (again) for this challenge, since there are so many great colours in it. I also thought I could do something creative with light, liquid and glass.
At first I had planned to have the thermometer in the upper third with the light shining through making a coloured shadow. After a bit of experimentation, I took this shot without a tripod from an overhead angle so that the coloured shadows were restricted to behind the glass itself.
I did think of coming in closer and reducing the white space, but I wanted to show the range of colours from red to blue.
This was photographed outside with just bright sunlight.
I used unsharp mask on the final image and tweaked the levels a little to even out the white background, though at the expense of losing a little detail in the white highlights. Message edited by author 2003-04-15 15:31:18. |

Pylonby gerardComment by shareinnc: Hello from the critique club :)
I like the symmetry of the shapes in this shot. The only problem with the shapes is that it pulls my eyes from one place to another. There seems to be no firm focal point.
The photo itself is a bit on the dark side as well.
Overall, however, I believe this was one of the better shots of the symmetry challenge. It met the challenge and did so with obvious talent. |

Rainbow Refractionsby gerardComment by wewillexplore: I think it's the reflections on the bottom of this shot that keep it from doing the colors any justice. I like the composition, though I wish you could see the red a bit more (maybe flip the whole thing around?). |
