Comment by nborton:
the horse on the left needs a little more room by his head. it makes it look like he is being squeezed into the shot. also the white line around the bottom and right side needs to either go, or continue around the whole shot.

Lovely background for the horses. Seems a bit over saturated.

Nicely composed, but a tad oversharp.

Lovely. I'm afraid the high sat distracts a little though ... masks some of the details. Crop is a little severe on the left horse - but that probably owes to the square restrictions.

Just too oversharpened. The light is a bit harsh. I like the idea of it but maybe if the crop wasn't so tight.

Critique Club Comment:

Itâs been so long since I have actually did a CC comment.
But I am back so here we go.
Iâll try to be honest here, so donât shoot me if I am a bit harsh.
When I do a CC comment I will suppose that you realy wanted to win a ribbon, and comment from that standpoint.

This is really a country life photo, but there are some things that could be improved. So you nailed the challenge, thatâs a point for you! But now to the photograph itself.

First, DPChallenge likes a WOW factor as you already seen from your comments.
I see a picture of a horse, but not realy a wow. So how can you improve that?
Try to give it a bit more contrast, maybe some more saturation, as far as I know DPC LOOOOVES saturation, and it makes the shot pop off the screen more.

You could have cropped it a bit different. The way it is now, with the fence, it is really a bit boring.
So crop off the fence, or next time, see if you can compose it differently if thereâs also something interesting going on with the fence.
Also the picture is very centered. Thereâs nothing wrong with centered, but DPC loves the rule of 3rds, and off centered subjects.
I know for sure if you composed it a bit more off centered that you would have a higher score.

Another point that you can practice is sharpening.
My score went up by points when I learned how to sharpen. DPC wants tack sharp images. Just try some settings, there are lots of them in the forum, or igf you have Photoshop CS2, try smart sharpening, it does a great job.

I hope this critique will help you âevolveâ your photography and/or your DPC experience.
If the comment was helpful please select the checkbox, this gives the CC members the feeling that we do some good work.

Keep on shooting.
