Critique Club Comment:

It’s been so long since I have actually did a CC comment.
But I am back so here we go.
I’ll try to be honest here, so don’t shoot me if I am a bit harsh.
When I do a CC comment I will suppose that you realy wanted to win a ribbon, and comment from that standpoint.

This is really a country life photo, but there are some things that could be improved. So you nailed the challenge, that’s a point for you! But now to the photograph itself.

First, DPChallenge likes a WOW factor as you already seen from your comments.
I see a picture of a horse, but not realy a wow. So how can you improve that?
Try to give it a bit more contrast, maybe some more saturation, as far as I know DPC LOOOOVES saturation, and it makes the shot pop off the screen more.

You could have cropped it a bit different. The way it is now, with the fence, it is really a bit boring.
So crop off the fence, or next time, see if you can compose it differently if there’s also something interesting going on with the fence.
Also the picture is very centered. There’s nothing wrong with centered, but DPC loves the rule of 3rds, and off centered subjects.
I know for sure if you composed it a bit more off centered that you would have a higher score.

Another point that you can practice is sharpening.
My score went up by points when I learned how to sharpen. DPC wants tack sharp images. Just try some settings, there are lots of them in the forum, or igf you have Photoshop CS2, try smart sharpening, it does a great job.

I hope this critique will help you “evolve” your photography and/or your DPC experience.
If the comment was helpful please select the checkbox, this gives the CC members the feeling that we do some good work.

Keep on shooting.

Lovely shot, that afternoon llow light is such a nice light to work with. You possibly won't score as high as you wanted with this because it doesn't have a DPC 'wow' factor. The elements are all there like low light, great texture on the coat and that lovely chestnut colouring. Closer cropping would highlight those, perhaps getting down to the horse's level and maybe just trying to get your subject into the Rule of Thirds.

This shot has potential. I would have cropped out the fence at the top. It is somewhat distracting. Also, maybe move the subject off center and give more negative space to give more interest.
