There could be a lot more going on in this image. There doesn't seem to be any dialogue with the viewer beyond: "here's my shoes which I just placed on this step". There's nothing in the picture to indicate change.

Where was this photo taken?? I'm almost sure I took a similar shot during a 1993 trip to China. It just caught my eye and I am curious.

The only obvious problem I see is that the picture is tilted a little counterclockwise. Otherwise, the colors are just dull, most likely because it's such an overcast day. I think increasing the contrast would do some good here.
