The softness of the focus and the poses of the two of you seem to add a lot of mystery to ths image. Had you not explained what was going on, it would have been just as good, maybe even better to try to figure it out with only the clues in the image.
Most lenses that can be manually focused have the focal distances marked on the focus ring. If there is enough light at the camera to see the numbers, it can be useful for this sort of shot if you want it in focus. I carry a tiny flashlight in my bag for setting the camera while shooting in low light.

This is cool! your look makes the shot and kinda gives it that feel like you are somewhere you shouldn't be and just got caught but you don't care.
Also I think this look could be "come on I hope this is in focus and the timer is set right..." :)
