Lovely tonal range on this shot. the colours just make it pop, not over sharpend, and an interesting shot well done

This is a great snapshot, and I don't use snapshot in any derogatory fashion. Where would photography be without snapshots? I'm envious of your ability to get such crisp clean focus with the 70-200 (I have a hard time using that lens). The background bokeh suits the scene well, and it's well composed. It's lower rated than I think it should be, but DPC voters tend toward the flash, the simple, the eye-catching most of the time, and moreso in Free Studies. But you know that. :-)

surfdabbler addressed the issue of "hi-key" - I'd find you some examples but I can't think of any specific ones at the moment. The pure white featureless background has it's uses - this would be a very easy shot to add a background of your choice to, for instance. It would be quite easy using the extraction tool (which I suck at using, but don't let that deter you) to separate out just the boy, then paste him on a background shot. You'd want to have the background have suitable, similar lighting. A gothic city view might work nicely!

I can't be much help on this one - I gave you a 7 and thought it a very good portrait. I like the bricks behind - gives it more substance than a plain background. I think the lighting is lovely - nice work with the reflector. The only thing I can think of is I might like to be able to see what she's leaning on but that's quite minor.

Comment by eamurdock:
Lighting is great, but I agree both dice should be in focus, or at least readable... I'd also shoot from an angle (so the points aren't parallel to the image edges), I think that might energize it a bit.

nice portrait, would you consider softening the light? You almost lose detail on her face, would be nice if her dark side were in the shadows a bit.

Very clean photo rob! Way to use that 50mm 1.4. (my son was spiderman this year too.) The aperture you chose really worked well.
