I usually don't care for shallow DOF. But here I think it works. I'm backwards I guess, 'cause I know a lot of people love shallow DOF but would think that this shot has your subject blurry / out of focus. But I really feel that there is emphasis on the sidewalk for a reason - like the kid really is showing the way. I do wish that the figure on the left were more in the frame but other than that I like this a bunch.

I have searched through the challenge for those entries where the negative space is more than just a plain black or white backdrop because, whilst I think that technique often makes for some really strong and high impact images, I̢۪m particularly drawn to entries where the negative space is relevant to the subject itself and actually contributes to the impact of the picture in a contextual as well as purely compositional way.

I̢۪m such a sucker for shallow DOF and I really like it here. The DOF really focuses attention on the main pink flower (and somewhat on the second one just behind) but the inclusion of a thick slice of grass and large expanse of stone wall provides an interesting environment, colour balance and composition.
