Really interesting scene. I'd agree in saying the HDR/equivalent processing is overdone for my liking (the boy's head in particular doesn't look natural) but it's a well seen and well taken shot.

I like the emotion I'm "seeing". They seem a bit bored, as if they have been waiting for a long time. I like the line of the hands from the top left to the bottom right. I agree, a larger aperture may help, but clearly you wanted us to see the background, and it looks like a very bright day. My critique would be to burn the headlight a bit so it does not distract from the child and crop out the right to the tree. Thanks for sharing.

I like the idea of the photo and especially that the boy is the only one looking at the camera. I think maybe a bit too much (highlight/shadow) manipulation and maybe some punch provided by the 50mm phenomenal DOF control.
