Wow. I didn't score this too well in the challenge, however it seems to be a better photo concept outside the challenge for me, and I really like it. Great editing.

Maybe I'm not the best to comment on this because a) I like your work and b) I generally like selective desat more than many others on this site. That being said...

1) I'm sure there were a few DNMC. Hopefully not many, but I bet there were some which likely dragged you down a bit.

2) I think what makes the picture suffer, and I just learned this myself on a current challenge, is that leafless trees make for a chaotic pattern which isn't always visually pleasing. We quickly lose which branch goes with what and then it looks like an oversharpened bundle of lines. It isn't too terrible here because you managed to pull your subject out with the desat, but it probably doesn't help.

3) Something just seems a bit off on having both the log and the lake in color. They compete now as the subject and we lose the focus of the picture. Maybe that's all just "fancy talk", but there might be some truth there.

FYI: I started to title it "Divining Fork" but thought that there was enough fork implied in the shot for most viewers - perhaps I was wrong based on the comments! LOL Oh well... Thanks for the Comments & the Favorites!

Great idea, and the b&w works great here. However, I find the light in the lower left seriously distracts from the image and naturally holds my eyes back from working their way up the stairs

Love the angle of the composition. The eye naturally follows the trail of lights as they line the stairs. The slight sepia tone here gives it a feel of a time gone past - a good memory. As much as the sepia tone adds to the mood - I still wonder what the color version would have looked like. My only critique on this photo is that there appears to be another source of light or candle on the bottom left of the image. This not only distracts attention away from the main focus but also serves to break the visual linear trail of the candles lining the steps.
