I have the canon 50mm f1.4 - I love it! And exactly for the reason you show here, you can snap off the photos, no flash, natural lighting. I also like the shallow dof.

I don't see anything really blown out by the flash. In fact, I think the flash highlights in her hair help to create a little more depth to the picture. It also separates her from the background. I like it.

I just finished taking a flash photography course, so I'm a little sensitive as well to the flash causing some blown out places in her hair, but I still think its a nice portrait.

Oh, and the main thing I learned in the flash photography course: That no matter what you do -- it's a matter of trial and error and you will get different effects every time, and probably will have to edit your photo alot anyway :) But I did learn how to lower the settings in my flash so that I don't get quite so much of a blast when I don't need it :)

Mas bien Ron. I was one of your 48 '7's. There seem to have been quite a few egg shots recently so to get one to stand out like this is pretty impressive

Great composition and sharpness. DoF is bang on. Also the lighting experiment has worked perfectly

Also worth mentioning how well the border sets off the image

Marilyn Monroe look-a-likey? Its a nice portrait and whilst I'm fine with the small blown cheek/nose highlights the blown out 'wig' is not quite right (she does seem pleased to meet though!)

I do like this, as much for the ability of your subject to get in this postion as anything :) You have adone a good job with the lighting and note your settings. The softness works well for me, its a peaceful looking shot :)
