Welcome to dpc. I hope you have fun here.

My first thoughts, I get distracted from the subject ( horse ) to the background home as its much brighter. Yes it does have great color and it would itself work as a great subject, but since this photo should be more impetus on the horse, its distracting. The colors are nice in the image.

As you mentioned, you will have problem with this scenario as the two different subjects, ice and black horse are too apart in the luminance and will be out of the dynamic range of your camera. One standard way to do is to take two separate exposures and blend them. More information can be found by search 'Digital blend' on google or forums. But as you know mergin two photos is not legal here at dpc, but if you shoot raw, you can take two exposures and merg them together and that's legal in advanced editing...

Nice shot, I like the angel of coming down but the flash left a big shadow and blew out the white on his chest. A 6

I love his color. I wish he didn't have the collar because his neck is so beautiful and the collar breaks up the smooth line, Good picture he looks like a hunter to me.

This is a beautiful animal and nice composition with the exception of the missing lower half of the legs. I would recommend including either no legs or all of the legs in the shot. Another issue is the lighting/flash. The shadow on the wall is a bit distracting. I like the upward angle and the choice of background.
