I am pretty new to photography and especially PS. I had a hard time taking a picture of my black horse against the white snow. All my shots were over or under exposed depending on what I metered. So, I tried to fix it in PS. Does anybody have an easy way to fix such a problem?

Greetings !!

Welcome to dpc. I hope you have fun here.

My first thoughts, I get distracted from the subject ( horse ) to the background home as its much brighter. Yes it does have great color and it would itself work as a great subject, but since this photo should be more impetus on the horse, its distracting. The colors are nice in the image.

As you mentioned, you will have problem with this scenario as the two different subjects, ice and black horse are too apart in the luminance and will be out of the dynamic range of your camera. One standard way to do is to take two separate exposures and blend them. More information can be found by search 'Digital blend' on google or forums. But as you know mergin two photos is not legal here at dpc, but if you shoot raw, you can take two exposures and merg them together and that's legal in advanced editing...

Looking forward to more participation from you.

if you have any questions, feel free to pm me

thanks,
Gaurawa

Good capture keeping the detail with the big contrast between dark and light tones.
