Maria, thank you for your comment. That dichotomy was exactly the point of the essay, I am glad that you felt it, too. The tradition of having kids beat the crap out of these big colorful figurines at birthday parties is in itself a bit creepy to me, but at least I expected some light-hearted atmosphere... but there was not much of that. Business as usual

I didn't know such places existed. I am caught between two different stories. The thousands of colored paper items are amazing. Then, the people. Some how there is an odd dichotomy between the people and the brightly colored things. It's as if the two should be in different essays. Makes the entirety very fascinating.
