Comment by Bran-O-Rama:
Great focus on the fireweed but would've liked a much shallower DOF, blurring out the distracting driftwood. Background is a little too busy.

Comment by David.C:
Lighting: The lighting is nearly perfect.
Pose: With the left elbow sticking out the lines draw the eye away from him. Taking the photo from his right instead of his left would have taken care of this. Also, on a minor note, the eyes are the most expressive part of the face, having him look down is fine within the context of the rest of the image but cutting his eyes in half with the rim of his glasses is distracting.
Background: The leaves are bit distracting, but not overly so.

Comment by Maverick:
A touch oversharpened, leading to the strange color effects on the green object in the center. Also, it looks as though there may be a story here, but based on the composition, it is difficult to tell what is going on.

Very nice shot. I like how you capture the character of his face. The older generations are so photogenic! Your background is a little distractiong. It either needs more light so you can really see it, or less light to make it less eye catching. Your lighting could be toned down just a touch on the subject too. All in all a very nice shot though!

Comment by GeneralE:
This pose/composition seems a little "loose" to me, probablu due to trying to show him in the "environment." I usually think of a "studio portrait" as a bit tighter and concentrating a little more on the face. Given what you wanted to show here, I think you did a good job with the lighting, focus, etc.

This is a great portrait in terms of speaking about the model's character. For me, it brings back memories of playing cribbage with my grandfather and brings hope that my kids have as great a relationship with my dad. After thinking through that, I thought about how you accomplished the effect. I think my favorite parts of this photo are:

Props: Chair and storybook are absolutely spot on.
Costume: Exactly what one expects
Facial expression on model: again, spot on
Lighting seems exactly right as well, as model is perfectly lit.

The only suggestion I have is to move the dark background further back from the model. As is it is just a little distracting.

Oops, I must need to give you another point on the score. After writing this, I really like this shot. -8

Very well done. I have only one complaint...the background is distracting because it's so difficult to tell exactly what it is. It appears to be plastic or vinyl or some other reflective material. Great pose, wonderful use of lighting. :o)

Looks oversharpened and a bit pixelized. Its also difficult to identify the subject or theme here - a lot of diverse things going on without something to bring it all together. The cropping on the lifter feels a bit awkward as well.
