If you mimic the forms in the photo more in your vector illustration, it will seem more natural. Also, matching the color palette will make a big impact - the bright, pure white is a little too harsh for the photo. If you want to take it one step further, import the vector layers separately into photoshop, layered over the original image, and blur them as they recede to work with the dof in your photo. Your additions to the image, the parts growing from the stalks, are very successful though.

WOW what a neat idea! My only nit-pick is the stem coming out from the center of the original twig, it seems a little too created. Could just be me though :D , otherwise what an interesting way to jazz up this image.

I don't mind the flares, I like them actually, they add context IMHO. I also like the gold treatment, although it does make them look a bit artificial.
