I like the straight down the lens look, adds sincerity and if you are comfortable enough to pull it off, which you have, all the better. Yup lighting is great.

one or other should probably be in focus. Unfortunately the idea is good but the execution spoils it, I think. Try using a smaller aperture and focus on the face of the closest person. I think it will have more impact

The horribly overexposed backround draws way too much attention. Also I probably would have given this a higher mark if I hadn´t seen about 10 other shots with cans and a string. 4

Ordinarily I like shallow depth, but this is too extreme. Combined with the sunlit background, it makes the far character look too strange. The near subject is nicely cropped.
