Maui Moonby carlosmComment by Falc: I was always told tha when shooting the moon use a telephoto lens. This allows the moon to become large enough in the frame to be useful.
This image doesn't give me any real detail in the moon and the big black silhouette really doesn't contribute much either. |

Maui Moonby carlosmComment by ralfw: Simple and beautiful composition here. For my tastes, the sky noise should be less, and the image sharper if possible - but again, simple, beautiful composition. Well done and best of luck in the challenge! |

Old Friendby carlosmComment by carlosm: thanks for the feedback folks! I realized that my pet shot was probably not going to be very well scored but just had to take it anyway. My poodle is a "Blue Standard" and now at 11yrs old is pretty much black and white so i thought i would give a try to capture a portrait. I've got tons of snapshots of her and she is very UN photogenic. Usually her eyes aren't visible so, i put a small spot behind me to reflect. this is probably the best picture i have of her since i took a little bit of time to think about it. With the tips rec'd here now it's time to go back and improve on it. Don't worry, i porbably won't enter a challenge with her again.... unless i just can't help myself.
thanks for the replies!

Old Friendby carlosmComment by candlerain: I am not going to 'review' your photo, because it will be very similar to everyone else's comments. I just want to say that your picture makes me kinda sad. When I was born until I was 14 years old we had 2 poodles. Saki was the oldest one and my favorite. Over the years she went blind and had to be held to go to the bathroom (she lost motricity in her back legs). We had to put her down. Your dog really looks like my Saki and it brings back memories. I know how you must feel about the picture rating so low. But don't worry, people were rating the PHOTO and not your DOG!
Thanks for your entry. Have fun on the site... |

Old Friendby carlosmComment by mk: Hi Carlos,
Welcome back to DPC. A few comments on your entry since you asked:
- It's extremely difficult to score well with pet shots. There's a few reasons for this. 1) Your pet is rarely as cute to others as it is to you (same with kids). 2) They are frequently entered. 3) They are often seen as sort of the lazy man's entry...look around and photograph the first thing you see which is often the pet sitting at your side. For these reasons, you need to have a really stellar pet shot in order to have any sort of success.
As for your particular photo, it seems to have some technical flaws. The focus isn't very sharp and you've blown out some areas on the right side of her face and in the background. You're lacking a bit of depth in your B/W. The eyes look a little ghostly...I'm not sure if that's how her eyes actually look or if the reflection is actually visible in the entirety of her eye? It makes her look slightly disconcerting, although a small catchlight is generally a good idea.
I hope you find this helpful. Good luck on your next challenge! |
