Nice study of light! I also love the deep shadows that you refer to. The blown specular highlights are distrcting though at the base and lip of the pitcher. Could you create a little "softbox" out of something to put on the flashlight?

I agree with dtreamin about the crop to the building but would go a bit tighter and cut off at the top of the tin roof in the center.

Try cropping this at about the left of the white building front. For me, the left 1/3 (especially the building) is too dark and distracts. Cropping tighter doesn't lose any of the beauty or pattern of the brick, the interest of the people. From the little I can see of the sky, it looks like there were some spectacular clouds.
