strangely, all that one can focus on is the mouth- counting the teeth, assessing the brightness and such, has completely distracted from the hair.

Great lighting, details and tones in this photo! Love the pose of the musician as he plays the saxophone. The curves of the instrument undulatea -it moves in a serpentine motion. The air travels the twisting path as the notes emerge not as a hiss but the smooth sounds of some soul jazz. Not sure of the backdrop as that it makes the imagery a little busy with all the lines. The other small critique I have is that a closer crop would have the musician and that smooth music literally filling the frame - a tight crop just above the waist and just a touch more off the top of the frame. That aside this is a great portrait!

thats really funny that you have used an expression that i have used altho slightly different ... of my dog katee usually in instagram .. i say .. wide awake while living the dream .. ;)
anyway .. on to commenting on your photo .. the title perfectly fits this image btw .. and i'm loving your black and white processing ..
the scene does have a dreamlike quality about it ..
and the girl .. her expression is so neutral that she could almost be dreaming .. while standing up .. !! ..
