Candlelight Sonataby taterbugComment by melismatica: This has the potential as great subject matter. Unfortunately, this composition is hurt by the light switch (we really don't want to see something as mundane as a modern light switch in a dramatic compostion such as this) and the dark areas to either side of the frame. Try this again but instead, don't try to get the whole piano in the shot. Move in closer to the lovely scroll work of the music stand and the old fashioned name plate over the keyboards. Just rotating your camera and making this a vertical shot would have eliminated all the distractions I mentioned. |

Candlelight Sonataby taterbugComment by CDS: I like the light beams from the lower candels. IMO the light switch detracts from the overall picture. Maybe some creative cropping could have helped. |

Candlelight Sonataby taterbugComment by 16point2mm: I'm torn. I really enjoy the lens flares from the candles here, but the excessive noise in the shot (low-light hell, but it's the price we pay), the light switch, and the pile of cardboard boxes in the background all tear away from a great concept. |

Candlelight Sonataby taterbugComment by L1: I hate to be picky, but the lightswitch in the background is very distracting. Also distracting is a kind of disequilibrium feeling from the photo not being centered (I know a lot of people frown on centered subjects, but for the symmetry in this shot to work, it probably needs it). The shadows on the wall detract a bit as well. I do like the piano and candles together as a subject, and I am not interpreting the challenge instructions SO literally that multiple light sources can't include those being in the picture (as opposed to being applied to the subject photographed). I think it is a good attempt...you obviously worked hard on your setup and were working for a particular look or mood. |

Life and Deathby taterbugComment by beckettboots: I like your framing of the tombstone with the pine boughs. The choice of decolorizing is very interesting and gives more weight to the lines and shapes. The figure isn't terribly compelling to me and feels a little too posed. |

Rusted Faithby taterbugComment by BobsterLobster: Critique Club:
First thing that hits you about this photo is that it's simply too small. Almost any image editing program will allow you to change the amount of compression when you save your image so that you can have the longest side 640 pixels long. This simple step will usually add at least 1 whole point to your scores.
The idea here for your photo is intriguing, and raises many questions. Is this person's faith being oppressed? Are the chains rusty because the faith has been oppressed for a long time? It looks like there are some great textures in this shot, but again it is impossible to tell as the picture is so small. It's a shame the top of the bible's spine has been chopped off by the edge of the frame... this looks unintentional.
So far, it looks like you have great talent... let's see larger versions of your photos! Try to have the longest side ALWAYS 640 pixels long! |
