At first I didn't like this too much - the "negative space" on the right is very heavy. But I've looked at it more and the composition is very clever. It is heavy on the right and feels overwhelming, but it does give that sense of being there. One thing I may have liked more is for the person to be a bit closer. He almost feels like part of the background.

I'm guessing this is Mark Wiley? This looks like the same place as The sun low and weak :)

Jan is right. It does have something. I like the high key and the clarity of the near eye - even though it has a reflection across it, it is not disrupted.
