Compositionally, I really like this. It is balanced and doesn't feel too "tight." Also, it is technically well done with good details visible. I think the bw works well to set the mood. I think it would feel more "candid" and less "portraity" if there was something, anything, to give the context of what he was thinking or doing.

I really like the graphic nature of this - just the kind of brave shot I'd love to see do well. The DPC stipplers will state there's no focal point but the fence does it in style for me.

This doesn't feel like a candid. In other words, I don't feel like I'm peeking in on some slice of reality. In spite of your title, it feels more like a portrait. But it's an interesting composition with nice textures, and I can certainly imagine that it is in fact candid, so 7.
