The Right Momentby pgattComment by mandyturner: *Critique Club*
I really like the contrast between the color of the sand and the blue sky. It is really nice to be able to see the texture of the rock up close without the rest of the image really blurry. The sky looks fierce! It appears to be moving very quickly and the wave hitting against the shore also repeats the feeling of strength. Nature is amazing and you have captured it well.
I would love to see this picture without the processing. There are some dark spots, but in a way it adds to the mood for me. I feel that the clouds are oversharpened. The edges are so sharp, that far away just seems unnatural.
I would also like to add that I really like how you framed the image with the rocks starting in the upper left hand corner. My eyes flow right through the middle of the image, as the rocks seperate the land and sea in just the right spot. Please forgive my horrible spelling. I just read what I typed and I sound like a hippie....just a little.LOL Great image and good luck in future challenges.

The Right Momentby pgattComment by Bear_Music: Heya pgatt, trying again :-)
It is interesting that this free study also uses the diagonal compositional device, but in this case it's a "negative" element rather than a "positive" one. As an aside, I'm a little surprised to see your flare, as I've yet to get any with my 10-22mm. It's not objectionable, though.
My overall impression of this is "too harsh", too contrasty by half. I'd have to see the RAW exposure to know what's possible. It's an immensely appealing scene, but it just feels too blocked up in the dark areas to completely click for me. I gave it a 6, anyway :-)
Feel free to send me the RAW if you wish so I can look at it. |

Lazy Sundayby pgattComment by Bear_Music: As far as overall tonalities go, this is an exceptionally lovely image. Pgatt, you're getting VERY good at B/W conversions. Since you've asked me to comment upon the image, I have these observations:
1. The composition is pretty static, and that hurts it. It divides more or less equally into an upper and lower zone, with the two pretty much in stasis. If, for example, the pier were longer and thrusting further into the "upper zone" that would be more dynamic. Additionally, the foreground piling is seriously orphaned and OOF to boot, which isn't good.
2. The lower left of the image is blocked to black; it seems to have been burned in (I can't be sure) and it really wants a trace more detail brought up, especially where the piling is reflecting and also in the "construction details" between the pilings.
I can imagine that if this were extended on the left to make a "normally proportioned" rectangle, that alone would strengthen the composition quite a bit. I'd like to see the original on this.
Good work! |

The Right Momentby pgattComment by Art Roflmao: This is that scene where Charleton Heston sees the hand of the Statue of Liberty sticking up out of the sand and screams dramatially "..you've blown it all to hell!!!"
Excellent job! |

The Right Momentby pgattComment by michael_p: great capture but on this occasion the lens flare hurts the position of the splashing wave, colours are great too. |
