they were probably a sadist !!!
as a thumb that onion looked like a big blob of ice cream and i wondered why someone'd be cutting it like that .. lol ..
i've heard that doing them under cold running water is the way to go but i've never tried .. i'm not a sadist, i'm a masochist & ignorant .. !! ..:)

Excellent post processing. Love the kittens expression. The ligth area near the top really adds to the action of the shot.

I'm ok with the crop and placement of the subject. For me it still feels a little sharp for a glamouresque type shot. You're headed in the right direction as I can see the softness around the edges.

Try a gaussian blur layer, radius 8, blend mode normal on top and slide the Opacity from 48 down to 38 and see if there is a feel there you like. This will soften the shot and calm down any blemishes that stand out.

Once you have the over all softness you like Erase or Mask the Eyes/eyelashes and Lips back through lightly, leave some softness (erase at opacity of 6 or 8) but bring them out a bit.

Merge down and as mentioned below a little dodging under the eyes might cheer up the shot.

You could also add a slight bit of grain or disfussion to make it even more dreamy. Possible a light vignette around the corners.

Real quick take with the steps above:

Great DOF here, keeping only the onion, fingers and knife in focus. Nice fade on the forward arm coming in from the left. I might crop a bit off the left coming in a smidgeon closer to the bowl on the cutting board (but that's just me).
