I have no problem with a dog as a subject for a portrait, in fact in some areas you can make AWESOME money doing pet portraits. You have a beautiful dog here. However, the shot doesn't quite do him justice. First off, it's a little cluttered. There are too many elements and most of them don't really add too much. The next thing (and probably most important) is the unimaginative lighting. This looks dull and flat. Moving more of the lights to one side or another would help give it depth. More lights would help with the colors (as well as boosting the levels in PS). You also managed to crop (either in editing or in camera) off his leg which to me is a little distracting.
