So, this is kind of a hard challenge to critique, simply because it's so open to interpretation. Subjectivity and hard-and-fast honest critique don't easily make good bedfellows. Nonetheless, I will forge on and give you a frank critique as the viewer/voter.
Firstly, I will say I liked the concept. First thing that came to mind was the story of the troll under the bridge. I guess in this case, the Neanderthal under the bridge. The B&W gave it nice gloomy, kind of sinister feel which suited the subject. But, for me, this was undone by the contradictory bright colors of the leaves and trees in the background. So you ended up with this incongruous collection of scenes...part cheerful part dark. I suspect the image would have done better being all B&W, and then using dodging and burning to draw attention to the center.
The detour sign does make a nice little point of interest, in a way like the traditional "keep out" sign. Further reinforcing the perceived theme of bad things happen past here.
Overall, I just personally didn't feel like the concept was executed as well as it could've or that the theme was consistent throughout enough to garner a 6+ score.
