There's not much separation between the sand and water contrast-wise. I know he's standing on land, but I have to keep telling my brain that every time I look at it. My instinctual brain doesn't believe me, which is causing me to get stuck looking at his feet rather than enjoying the photo as a whole. I think just burning the edge of the land to create a subtle dark line would help with this.

The story here is very good, the retouching ruins it for my part. I would've gone for a cleaner black and white, and added more drama with darkening the sky, sea, and corners. Easily done with curves and layer mask if you use photoshop, but subtle is a keyword in such a process though. I would also taken a step back to include the entire chair, giving more room on either side of the photo, but I guess the action forced you to fire :) A 7 from me
