In a way, yours and my terrarium are similar. I've always loved that triptych film. This really works. I like the bird opposed to the tree with the diagonal line that connects them invisibly. YAY Welcome to the fun month!

That floating cup in background draws me away from the main subject. Good composition with just a little of the man so as to support the main subject but not overpower it. Great expression of subject and good focus. I'd crop bottom almost at kids hand and crop some water off the right side and get the kids head off dead center in the photo. You might also "flip" the photo so the man is on the right side of the photo so when the eye comes in from the left of the photo it sees the kid first and the man last.

" Nearly all of the famous African explorers and hunters--Livingstone, Stanley, Burton, Selous, Speke, DuChaillu--had boating mishaps with hippos. All considered the hippo to be a wantonly malicious beast. Not long ago Spencer Tyron, a white hunter, was killed while hunting near the shores of Lake Rukwa, Tanzania. A bull hippo turned over the dugout canoe from which Tyron was shooting, and bit off his head and shoulders. "
