Comment by daysez:
The human eye can see the velvet from this distance and lighting angle because the brain puts that texture information in when it processes the image. The camera has to be right in its face to see texture.

Doesn't fit the challenge. If it was a better picture of a dear(close up, brighter, more interesting) it would score higher.

This meets the Texture challenge requirement but only because you say so in the title. I KNOW antlers have that velvety texture but I can't detect it from looking at this picture. You would have a much better pic for this challenge if you had cropped to only have the head of the left guy and showing good close up focus of those velvety antlers. This pic has a snapshot quality to it.

Comment by RedRuthann:
Not bad. For me, it looks too much like a 'snapshot'. Something I may do, at least for 'texture' challenge, is to crop and focus on one thing, say the deer to the left, and maybe emphasize the antlers. Sometimes, for me, taking a snapshot and cropping it can really change the image dramatically.
Still great work!

This photo is more of a snapshot than something I expect to see in a challenge.

For those that are just learning, like me.

Composition: Scoring in this area is based on basic composition of a picture and includes the rule of thirds, balance, cropping, and curved and diagonal lines. Subject matter that does not lend itself to the picture or otherwise unwanted is also considered here.

Originality: Scoring in this area is based on pictures or concepts that I have seen, as well as how much effort you have invested in the picture. Usually a little something that sets it aside from a snapshot. Does it make me want to come back for another look? You know things like that.

Technical Aspects: Focus, exposure, lighting, and other special effects (done by the camera), and post processing are all considered in this category.

Meets Challenge: This is based on my interpretation of if you, have/have not, met the challenge. This is fairly simple but quite important for this site.

There are many sites that can give you assistance in achieving better skills in photography, but I think the best way to learn is to take pictures and show them to other people. Believe me when it is a good one you will know it.

Good luck!

Your photo is a good one of the deer (although a little overexposed), but we're too far away to really appreciate the texture of the velvet.

Comment by Swashbuckler:
This is a pretty nice photo of opportunity. I love deer shots. Yes, they do have lovely velvetty horns, but even if I download this shot and blow it way the heck up, it's still pretty hard to see that much detail. The road behind the deers also conveys the sense of "tameness" in these two. 5 Swash

Good catch of the dear, but the texture is not tangible.. just inferred.
