Soaringby alexgurleyComment by sfalice: GREETINGS FROM THE CRITIQUE CLUB
welcome to DPC! Your second entry, and hey, you broke the 5 barrier. Not bad, Alex.
The glee, the exuberance, the sheer fun of this entry entranced our viewer/voters. You comments show this. If you two didn't collapse into a gaggle of giggles after the shoot, I would be surprised.
congratulations on getting your model in pretty good focus in mid-air. Not easy, my friend. Then, I suppose we have to discuss the surroundings. The hot spots, like the lamp & the bedding really have to be handled carefully to take this fun photo out of the snapshot category.
So, my thoughts on this would be to consider your surroundings with care, in this case perhaps remove the lamp from camera view & use dark foreground fabric.
You are telling a story in one photo.
I rather think you will be very good at it when you have a few more technicals under your belt so keep 'em coming.
I hope this little critique is helpful to you.
Alice

locked outby alexgurleyComment by spiritualspatula: Hello from the Critique Club and welcome to the site!
It’s good that you’re considering the idea of cold as a whole and not just “lets take a photo of a pile of snow or an icecube,” but remember that voters are relatively direct in their interpretation of subject matter. I think this is part of what docked your score. Beyond this and in regard to technicals, you have good focus and your saturation is good, but there isn’t much color in your photo. Also, considering the pose you were in, I think it would definitely have been feasible to decrease your shutter speed to knock down your ISO, and all the noise with it (which is pretty apparent). Noisy photos are not always well received even if the noise is used appropriately with the subject matter and almost never if it doesn’t have some clear relationship. The doorway is also a bit skewed, and this could have been alleviated a bit by a more careful placement of the camera.
I agree with Yo_Spiff on his point as well- emphasizing the breath on the window would make for a closer relationship between Cold and your chosen subject matter by concentrating on the portion that is cold, and not the aspect that is locked out.
Try to also think about how you weren’t able to accomplish what you set out to- understanding how to achieve your vision is, after all, just as integral as having an interesting idea.
Keep at it, and I hope to see more of your photos in the future. |
