Thank you for your response.....I will try what you instructed. I have underexposed in the past and still the moon came out blown out.....I was thinking a filter might work...but......am not sure.....
Am using a 5D MII as well.....have a 70-200 & 2X extender as well. Jim

Would you mind sharing how you took your picture of the moon? I just can't figure it out...always comes blown out for me?

Thanks, jimet00@hotmail.com Jim

I used my 70-200mm mounted on my Canon Extender EF 2x which basically brought the moon closer by factor of 2. Still, the moon was fairly small in my frame. The most important thing for me was to make sure the moon was sharp, so I had to have a fairly fast shutter speed (at least 1/125 sec). The camera was in Av mode so I had to adjust the ISO to get the shutter speed that I wanted. Because it had started to get dark, the camera meter thinks that it needs to overexpose in order to compensate for the dark skies (since the dark skies were in the frame too), hence the moon would come out blown out. What you need to do is to underexpose relative to what the camera says. I always use my exposure bias wheel on my 5D Mark II. I think I went -1 for this one. I didn't care about the sky coming out dark because it was the moon that was important to me. I was planning on extracting the moon out of that picture and stick it into another. Make sure you are on tripod for this. I hope this helps.

I love the story behind all that went into making this the award winning photo that it turned out to be. I love it, and you're so right: Who isn't drawn to the celebration of a pure moment. Congratulations!
