Challenge: What DPC Loves the Most (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Canon EOS-5D Mark II
Lens: Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM
Date: Mar 16, 2011
Aperture: f/2.8
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/1000
Date Uploaded: Mar 19, 2011

I put a lot of thought into this challenge before entering it.  I looked at many things before deciding what type of shot I wanted to enter.  I was aware that landscape shots usually dominate the free studies, but to me on the contrary to what a lot of people thought, THIS challenge was not a free study.  I could have posted a great shot of a landscape and titled it "Landscape", but this challenge was about what DPC loves the MOST.  A lot of people would have scored it low because they don't think it is the landscapes that they love the most.  I know there are a lot of people that love portraits,  but not just any portrait would have placed high in this challenge.  It had to be something different ... both pose-wise and post-processing-wise.  I wanted to come up with an entry that would reach as wide an audience as it possibly could, something that we all share, something that moves us all.  In the meantime when I look at the photographers that leave the strongest impact, they are the ones that capture human emotions in a unique way.  That is want I decided to do.  I wanted to come up with a shot that when most people looked at it, they would say "That is how I want to capture a moment in a person".  I put my style of post-processing into it which comes off as dramatic and moody and people usually respond well to it.  I had done this style on one of my previous entries and I am proud that it finished high in a free study which is extremely difficult. Here is that image:

I am glad that I succeeded with this image.  Thank you!

p.s. This is a candid shot of somebody I do not know. Lighting is all natural, so was it in my "Old Soul" shot.

I love the story behind all that went into making this the award winning photo that it turned out to be. I love it, and you're so right: Who isn't drawn to the celebration of a pure moment. Congratulations!

Ambient is the best kind of lighting. Excellent shot. By far my fav in the challenge, for you did indeed give us what we love the most, whether most will see it or not. And apparently they did see it. Great work all around.

Congrats on the double ribbon rollover as well - on the heels of a ribbon that was just on the front page, too. A perfect trifecta in the span of two weeks. Impressive!

Good idea & very well executed photo, you immediately feel the emotion.
If i posed like that there would be to much lens flare from all the fillings, she has seriously well preserved teeth.

This is flippin' BRILLIANT!!!! Everything about this image is perfection. Such a profound expression, rich tones and colors, and that lighting. The sort of image that makes me question my own worth as a photographer. Daring and tender. Bravo. (not voting)
