I think shooting from a little higher angle would let you see more of the pieces of the game and the board. The model could be up on his elbows a bit so you could still see his face and he needn't be looking at the camera. This higher angle would pretty much eliminate the background as you can frame the image differently than you have here. Not sure if this helps any but it's my 2 cents worth.

Old diners are indeed cool! I like this and there is a lot for me to look at, unfortunately at this size it's hard to make out a lot of detail.

at first i didnt like it, but then it gave me a dreamy feel of great times gone by...
